We serve in Melbourne

Bring your passion for service to Melbourne as you serve alongside Lions and Leos from around the world at convention. Choose from a variety of life-changing service projects, make new friends and see how local Lions are serving their community.

Once you’ve identified the perfect project, take these steps to register or modify your existing registration to sign up:

  • Visit the Lions International Convention registration site to register or modify your existing registration.
  • If modifying, click on “Modify or cancel an existing registration.”
  • Enter your Record ID and the email you used at registration. You can find your Record ID in your confirmation email.

Offsite service projects

Please note: The start and end times listed below do not include the commute time to and from the convention center or to and from project venues. Additional information about transportation to service projects will be sent to registrants in early June.

Vision Australia Braille Book Assembly

Date: Friday, June 21, 2024
Time: 09:00–12:00
Volunteer Capacity: 20
Minimum Age: 18

Project Description: The Felix Library helps children who have vision loss to learn and develop in a unique, sensory way to support their lifelong literacy and learning. Lions will help put together children’s books with braille overlays and assemble story kits that are sent out to assist caregivers and teachers in bringing stories to life for sight-impaired children.

Activity Level: Light (seated tasks available for those with limited mobility)

Salvation Army Meal Service

Date: Friday, June 21, 2024
Time: 08:15–10:45 (Breakfast shift), 10:45–14:00 (Lunch shift)
Volunteer Capacity: 12 per shift
Minimum Age: 18

Project Description: The Magpie Nest Cafe serves free meals to Melbourne’s most vulnerable community members and provides a safe, supportive, inclusive and welcoming community for all. Lions will assist with table service, taking and delivering orders, preparing tea and coffee, plating meals and basic food prep, welcoming clients, clearing and wiping down tables, washing dishes and assisting with end-of-day cleaning.

Foodbank Victoria

Date: Friday, June 21, 2024

Project Description: Foodbank Victoria believes that all Victorians should have regular access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. Lions will support packing and moving boxes of dry goods and pantry staples onto pallets, packing down large crates of fresh fruit and vegetables into smaller hamper boxes and relabeling pantry items.

FareShare Meal Prep

Date: Friday, June 21, 2024

Project Description: FareShare transforms rescued, donated and homegrown food into millions of delicious, healthy meals that will feed and contribute to the well-being of Australians experiencing hardship. Lions will process and prepare freshly harvested and rescued vegetables, assemble and pack single-serve meals and learn about food waste, food rescue and food poverty in Melbourne.

Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve

Project Description:Discover the unique and critical indigenous flora and ecosystems within Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve. Explore and identify a variety of plants and their traditional purposes while you participate in conservation activities that may include removal of invasive species, planting or picking up litter.

Activity Level: Moderate (walking, bending, kneeling)

Fleece Blanket Making

Date: Sunday, June 23, 2024

Project Description: Join Lions and Leos as we make fleece blankets for Melbourne’s homeless community. These blankets provide warmth and security to comfort those living on the streets or in temporary housing.

Hygiene Kits for the Homeless

Date: Monday, June 24, 2024
Time: 13:30–15:00 (Shift 1), 15:30–17:00 (Shift 2)
Volunteer Capacity: 25 per shift
Minimum Age: 8

Project Description: Support vulnerable community members by assembling basic hygiene kits that will help to provide self-confidence and dignity to those in need.

Activity Level: Light (seated tasks available for those with limited mobility)

Adult sock donation drive

Lions International is collecting new, adult men’s and women’s socks to donate to Melbourne area charities. From environmental to health reasons, socks serve as a vital resource for those facing homelessness. Please support our host city by including new adult socks in your suitcase.

A collection bin will be available in the exhibit hall.
